The Molybdenum Difference
While SS 304 is perfectly adequate for non-contact parts and structural framing, SS 316L is mandatory for product-contact surfaces in pharma. The addition of Molybdenum to the 316L alloy provides drastically enhanced resistance to pitting and chloride corrosion. This is crucial when processing harsh chemicals or utilizing aggressive CIP cleaning agents.
